Field Trip Activities

Choose the events and activities that fit best with your lesson plan. Please bear in mind that some require advance reservations. Here are some tips to help you plan ahead so that your day at the Museum runs as smoothly as possible:

  • Permanent exhibits are included with Exhibit Halls admission and are open during regular Museum hours, unless otherwise noted.

  • Each live presentation is designed with a target grade level in mind but is open to a general audience. No fees in addition to Exhibit Halls admission are required, but some presentations require advance registration.

  • 3-D Digital Cinema, Omni and Planetarium shows, and the Butterfly Garden require additional fees and reservations for a timed entrance.

  • Exhibit Halls, 3-D Digital Cinema, Omni films, Planetarium, and Butterfly Garden tickets should be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Other field trip activities that require a reservation should be booked at least two weeks in advance.

Omni

  • Choose from our regularly scheduled films, or take advantage of our special 11:00 a.m. show, set aside just for schools. Pre-selected to support your science and social studies curriculum, these films rotate each week.
  • Closed captioning, show scripts, and special soundtracks are available for select shows. For more information, call 617-723-2500.
  • All Omni films are recommended for grades 3 - 12, unless otherwise noted. Length: 50 min. Capacity: 309 seats.

3-D Digital Cinema

  • Available: Inquire for days and times. Schedule subject to change without notice.
  • Shows are recommended for students in grades 2 - 12. Length: 20 min. Capacity: 120.

Planetarium

  • Available: Inquire for days and times.
  • Schedule subject to change without notice. Length: 35 - 45 min. Capacity: 209 seats.
  • Red lamps are available by request for use by school-provided sign-language interpreters.
  • Assistive listening devices are available for all Planetarium shows. Please contact schoolplanetarium@mos.org with questions about further accessibility needs, including tactile/Braille materials, show scripts, and closed captioning.

Butterfly Garden

  • Entry times every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.
  • Schedule subject to change without notice. Length: 30 min. Capacity: 30.

Live Presentations

  • For drop-in programs, check the daily schedule to find events taking place at their regularly scheduled times, or pick up a copy of the Museum map / guide (PDF) when you arrive at the Museum. Seating is first come, first served.
  • For programs requiring advance registration, email presentationrequests@mos.org at least two weeks before your visit with requested show title, date of visit, and number attending (25 people minimum required).
