Butterfly Garden

A Living Exhibit Takes Flight

Walk among the free-flying residents of this warm conservatory filled with exotic plants. Overlooking the Charles River, this tropical oasis offers a wonderful opportunity to get close to a variety of living butterflies from New England and across the globe.

Upon entering the garden, you'll begin to notice the details— size, color pattern, wing shape — that make each species unique. Printed guides with photographs will help you identify the butterflies and moths you see, while labels interspersed among the exotic foliage will highlight key behaviors to watch for, such as feeding, courting, and basking.

The "emergence box" offers a window into the butterfly behavior that most powerfully stirs the human imagination: the metamorphosis from earthbound caterpillar to winged adult. Look inside to see hanging chrysalids transform into adult butterflies. If you're lucky, you might see a new butterfly crawl out of its casing or a recently emerged adult pump fluid into its wings.

In other displays and activities, learn about the four radically different stages of the butterfly life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalid, and adult. Witness some of the ways that butterfly colors and wing patterns give them protection strategies such as camouflage, warning coloration, and mimicry. Finally, explore live specimen terrariums that offer insight into the butterfly's relationship to its animal and insect ancestors.

Educators: Download the educator guide below for pre-visit materials related to the monarch butterfly. The kit includes activity sheets and information on the monarch life cycle.

Primary Connections:

National Science Education Standards (1996)
(National)

  • Life Science > Interdependence of organisms (Grade: 9 – 12)
Organisms both cooperate and compete in ecosystems. The interrelationships and interdependencies of these organisms may generate ecosystems that are stable for hundreds or thousands of years.

Secondary Connections:

MA Science and Technology/Engineering Framework (2006)
(Massachusetts)

  • Life Science (Biology) > 13 Living Things and Their Environment (Grade: 6 – 8)
Give examples of ways in which organisms interact and have different functions within an ecosystem that enable the ecosystem to survive.
  • Life Science (Biology) > 03 Plant Structures and Functions (Grade: 3 – 5)
Recognize that plants and animals go through predictable life cycles that include birth, growth, development, reproduction, and death.
  • Life Science (Biology) > 03 Life Cycles (Grade: K – 2)
Recognize that plants and animals have life cycles, and that life cycles vary for different living things.
  • Inquiry and Experimentation > Skills of Inquiry (Grade: K – 2)
    Discuss observations with others.
  • Inquiry and Experimentation > Skills of Inquiry (Grade: K – 2)
Make predictions based on observed patterns.
  • Inquiry and Experimentation > Skills of Inquiry (Grade: K – 2)
Ask questions about objects, organisms, and events in the environment.
  • Life Science (Biology) > 04 Plant Structures and Functions (Grade: 3 – 5)
Describe the major stages that characterize the life cycle of the frog and butterfly as they go through metamorphosis.

National Science Education Standards (1996)
(National)

  • Life Science > Life cycles of organisms (Grade: K – 4)
Plants and animals have life cycles that include being born, developing into adults, reproducing, and eventually dying. The details of this life cycle are different for different organisms.
  • Science as Inquiry > Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry (Grade: K – 4)
Ask a question about objects, organisms, and events in the environment.
