Behind the Headline: Ancient Life Blooms Anew
A group of Russian scientists recently generated living, flowering plants from the immature fruit of an ancient Arctic flower that was preserved in the Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years! This revived ancient plant is closely related to the present-day Arctic campion, and is giving the scientists an unprecedented glimpse into the evolution of this plant species. But a bigger question still looms. Is it possible to revive other ancient organisms, such as woolly mammoths or even dinosaurs?
